Camping Award Passing Requirement

The Camping ward involdes living outdoors (in one place) for a week or longer while the Expedition awards requires mobility and the carrying of all necessary equipment.


Throught camping, you can develop a love for outdoor living and learn caluable skills and gain confidence that can be enjoyable. Camping has been part of the BB since the 1890's and has been a tradition of the Brigade all over the world. Boys are trained to cope with the planning and practical running of the camp, as well as to adapt to different surroundings outside the comforts of home.


Basic Level


Boys applying for this awards must have attended a couse on camping for a period of 12 lesesons and have spent a total of 4 consecutive days under canvas and have passes a test on the subjects below:


a) By practical, oral or written test show an adequate knowledge of:


- the various types of tents, their particular uses, advantages and disadvantages
- ancillary equipment such as fly sheets, groundsheets and bedding, their correct use and treatment
- personal health and hygience while camping
- the importance of good campsite selection and layout
- the country code


b) Prepare at least a meal in a group of three or less and show the proper way of starting a fire including preparing a kitchen. Proper hygiene should be observed.


c) With the assistance of 3 Boys who do not hold any camping Awards, carry out the pitching, striking and packing of a tent completely and correcly for a short period of time as set by the officer. If possible, the tent should not be a lightweight tent.


d) Able to build a gadget for camping use


e) Basic knots that a Boy should be able to tie easily:


- reef knot
- figure-of-eight
- clove hitch
- round turn and two half hitches
- double sheet bend
- timber hitch
- buntline hitch
- bowline
- double black wall hitch
- marine spike hitch


Advanced Level


Boys applying for this awards muct have attended a course on camping for a period of 12 lessons and have spend a total of 4 consecutive days under canvas and who have passes a test of the subjects covered as below:


a) By practical, oral or written test, show an adequate knowledge of:


- the care, maintenance and storage of camping, cooking and other equipement for the purpose of the camp


- necessary arrangement of sanitation, hygiene and safety i.e. latrines, rubbish disposal, food storage, water suppl, washing facilities, fire precautions, etc.


b) Prepare at least a day's meal in a group0 of 3 or less and show the proper way of starting a fire including preparing a kitchen. Proper hygiene should be observed.


c) With the assistance of 3 Boys who do not hold any Camping Awards, set up a campsite which include the tent, a kitchen, a toilet, campfire and fencing around the site for a limited period of time as set by the officer.


d) Basic knots that the Boy should be able to tie easily:


- timber hitch and half turn
- rolling hitch
- fisherman bend
- running bowline
- French bowline
- slip knot
- middleman and butterfly knot
- square lashing
- diagonal lashing
- sheer lashing
- gym lashing
- round lashing
- plus other knots at basic level
